You don't need superpowers to plan for good behavior. Gathering great information, using helpful tools, adjusting communication styles, and knowing when and how to use consequences and rewards can perform some amazing feats.

Great information.

  • Know students’ likes, dislikes, triggers, and calming methods.
  • Encourage parents to share anything new or different that may affect their child's behavior.
  • Find out about the strategies used at home or at school that can be enforced at church.

Tools and training.

  • Stay on schedule, develop routines, define activity areas, and encourage regular attendance.
  • Have helpful tools on hand, including noise-cancelling ear muffs/plugs, timers, and a student's favorite toys and activities.
  • Learn and train your team with effective communication styles.

Boundaries and rewards.

  • Show mercy and grace. Be selective in what behaviors need redirection. Ask yourself, do we really need to address this issue for the short time they are with us at church?
  • Use positive reinforcement. Use rewards wisely, don't allow them to support bad behavior.
  • Agree upon reasonable limits and consequences that you can follow through on.
