Life's journey is full of decisions for every family. For parents raising children with special needs, the road can be bumpy, constantly changing, and full of roadblocks. Learn the types of decisions your families need to make regarding housing, caregivers, employment, continued education, social opportunities, transportation, and finances. It’s a long list, yet you only need to know a bit about each to make a big difference. Learn about the available resources and help families navigate the many milestones.

  • Identify the services and benevolence sources in your church that help. 
  • Vet outside services and websites before recommending; seek reliable referrals.
  • Browse through Texas Health and Human Services and locate your Local IDD authority (LIDDA).  
  • Find out how to work with organizations without compromising your church's non-profit status.

  • Encourage families to start planning when their children are very young. Remind everyone to join the waiver interest lists.
  • Celebrate with families as they reach certain milestones. 
  • Care for families when they mourn the loss of life moments that could have been.  
  • Create opportunities for seasoned parents to guide new parents through their journey.
