Life's journey is full of decisions for every family. For parents raising children with special needs, the road can be bumpy, constantly changing, and full of roadblocks. Guide families to resources that support their marriage, parenting, and siblings. Learn the types of decisions your families need to make. It’s a long list, yet you only need to know a bit about each to make a big difference.

Define needs.

  • Marriage counseling, parenting advice.
  • Support for siblings of all ages.
  • Housing, caregivers, employment, continued education, social opportunities, transportation, and finances.

Research Resources

  • Identify the services and benevolence programs in your church that provide support.
  • Vet outside services and websites before recommending; seek reliable referrals.
  • Browse through Texas Health and Human Services and locate your Local IDD authority (LIDDA).
  • Find out how to work with organizations without compromising your church's non-profit status.

Encourage and care.

  • Encourage families to start planning when their children are very young. Remind everyone to join the waiver interest lists.
  • Celebrate with families as they reach certain milestones.
  • Care for families when they mourn the loss of life moments that could have been.
  • Create opportunities for seasoned parents to guide new parents through their journey.
