We rely on the Holy Spirit to bring our students to faith in Jesus, so we press on to teach the gospel even when the class is chaotic, attendance is low, and we don't see those "Aha, I get it" moments. Let's trust and persevere in teaching those with special needs about God's love, grace, and mercy, and guide them through faith milestones by adapting lessons creatively and staying flexible.

Trust and persevere.

  • Trust students are listening and learning even when they don’t appear to be.
  • Persevere, knowing our role is to make disciples of all people.
  • Always assume intelligence.

Adapt creatively.

  • Identify the lesson's main point, repeat it often, and in different ways.
  • Use media, props, and communication styles that engage all senses.
  • Replace abstract words and phrases with clear descriptions and definitions.
  • Find ways for every student to answer questions, share praises, and ask for prayer.

Stay flexible.

  • Try to teach the class together, but be open to meeting students where they're at.
  • Allow students to fidget quietly, pace, and stem while learning.
  • Adjust the environment, materials, and teaching style as students grow and change.
  • Find ways to make baptism and church membership accessible to all.
