Your students will love attending church when you offer options for all abilities and ages. Any space can be transformed into a fun and comfortable place to learn about Jesus. Any program can become more inclusive. Start with what you have and add tools and equipment as you grow.

Self-contained classroom

  • Provide a quieter, more secure space with a higher volunteer-to-student ratio.
  • Select locations with access to playgrounds, restrooms, and drive-up drop-off.
  • Make sure doorways and pathways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs.
  • Divide rooms visually into areas for learning, movement, and being calm.

Inclusion programs

  • Arrange for students to join typical activities with or without a buddy.
  • Provide fidgets, quiet activities, and noise-blocking ear muffs that help students participate.
  • Share helpful tips with peers and leaders on ways to engage and support them.
  • Allow students to retreat to a contained classroom if overwhelmed.

Tools and equipment

  • Start with items that keep everyone safe and learning about Jesus.
  • Add tools that minimize and manage challenging behavior.
  • Buy personal favorites so students love coming to church.
  • Make and share wish lists of items and equipment that will strengthen your ministry.
